If you have large windows that get direct sunlight, you already know how beautiful—and sometimes brutal—that Texas sunshine can be.

My mom always told me, “Don’t buy a house that faces west.”

Why?

Because she grew up in a home where the afternoon and evening sun coming through those west-facing windows could be absolutely brutal. The heat. The glare. The fading furniture. And those moments when you couldn’t even see the TV because the sun was shining directly into the room.

So when my husband and I recently bought our new construction home in downtown Rockwall, Texas, I thought we had avoided that problem.

Our home faces east.

Problem solved, right?

Not exactly.

East-Facing Windows Can Be Brutal, Too!

Every morning, my husband and I sit down with our coffee and start the day.

And for a little while, we’re basically squinting at each other.

The morning sun pours through our beautiful windows, and until the sun rises a little higher, the glare can be intense.

That’s when I was reminded of something we tell our customers all the time:

The right window coverings aren’t just about how your windows look. They’re about how your home lives.

And as the owner of Bumble Bee Blinds of Rockwall, I have the unique opportunity to experience the products we sell in my own home.

So we decided to put our own advice to work!

So, What’s the Best Window Covering for Large Windows With Direct Sun?

There isn’t one single answer for every home.

The best window shades, blinds, shutters, or drapes depend on your home’s style, the direction your windows face, how much sunlight you receive, how much privacy you want, and how much light control you need.

But for our new home, we chose something we have seen become incredibly popular with our customers:

Motorized Room Darkening Shades

In our previous home in Heath, we had beautiful, traditional shutters. We loved them. Shutters are timeless, classic, and fit beautifully into so many Texas homes.

But our new home has a different style.

So this time, we considered several options—including Roman shades and drapes—but ultimately decided that motorized room darkening shades were the perfect fit for us.

And we couldn’t be more excited to get them installed!

We chose one of our most popular natural colors for the lower floor, while going with a sleek black shade upstairs.

The combination gives us the clean, modern look we wanted while also helping us control the intense morning sunlight.

And there’s something pretty great about being able to control your shades without walking from window to window.

Especially before that first cup of coffee.

Why Motorized Shades Are So Popular

Motorized window shades have become one of the most requested window-covering options we offer our Texas customers.

And it’s easy to understand why.

Motorized shades can provide:
